What students learn
Students build a foundation in EMS systems, responder safety, medical/legal responsibilities, anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, airway and ventilation, pharmacology basics, shock and resuscitation, medical emergencies, traumatic injuries, obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics, and EMS operations.
New Jersey certification path
New Jersey EMT students should be ready for both classroom testing and practical skills verification. After successful course completion, students generally move through the National Registry EMT testing process and New Jersey OEMS credentialing requirements before practicing as certified EMTs.
How to prepare
Plan for regular attendance, reading, homework, skills practice, and exam review. Students should be comfortable studying at a high-school reading level or above and should expect EMT training to feel closer to a college-level workload than a short first aid class.
